Have you ever wondered how cloves are made?

Cloves are one of the most important spices of commerce. It is a spice made from the flower buds of an evergreen tree called, appropriately enough, the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum). Clove flower buds are harvested in their immature state and then dried. Whole cloves are shaped like a small, reddish-brown spike, usually around 1 centimeter in length, with a bulbous top. They are Native to the Maluku islands of Indonesia and are commonly used as spice. Cloves are harvested twice a year and are available throughout the year owning to different harvest seasons in different countries.

ORIGIN

Cloves are cultivated mostly in Brazil, the West Indies (included Haiti), Tanzania. Madagascar, India but Indonesia is most closely associated with the Production of cloves.

TASTE

Cloves provide one of the most powerful flavors of all the world’s spices. The taste is pungent, strong, and sweet with a bitter, astringent flavor as well. Cloves also have a distinct and undeniable warmth to some; the flavor is almost hot. This spice is simply that intense!

COOKING WITH CLOVES

Whole or ground cloves are used to flavor sauces, soups, and rice dishes, notably a number of traditional Indian dishes and one of the components of Garam Masala.
